Polish Post and Vatican Post have presented a unique stamp with Mikołaj Kopernik
The joint philatelic emission of Poczta Polska and the Vatican Post, commemorating Nicolaus Copernicus, was solemnly presented in the Apostolic Nunci in Warsaw. This is the third, already this year's Poczta Polska publishing house, which commemorates the 550th anniversary of the birth of our outstanding countryman.
The stamp was presented by Salvatore Pennacchia, the Apostolic Nuncio in Poland and representatives of the Poczta Poczta Board: President Krzysztof Falkowski and Wiesław Włodek, vice president responsible for philatelic activities.
The work of Jan Matejko entitled "Astronom Mikołaj Kopernik, or conversation with God", from 1873 and in the collection of the Jagiellonian University Museum. This is the famous picture that was made on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the Astronoma's birth. The work presents our great compatriot during the observation of the sky from his private tower, located at the Frombork cathedral hill. Poczta Polska also decided to appreciate another patron of 2023, the author of the picture, outstanding Jan Matejko with this special philatelic value. The painter was known for his admiration for the achievements of the great astronomer, which was also expressioned in the artistic legacy.
This year's philatelic value devoted to astronomer
In January this year. Poczta Polska issued a postage stamp together with an envelope of the first day of circulation (FDC), depicting a portrait of an astronomer, from an epitaph located in the Fromborska Archcathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The image has a great artistic value because it is the only preserved image of Mikołaj Copernicus in Frombork - a city of the most creative Polish explorer and recent years of his life.
In February, Poczta Polska introduced a envelope with a printed postmark sign, which inspired the house of Nicolaus Copernicus in Toruń. In 2022, the facility won a special distinction during the European Museum of the Year Award awards. Interestingly, the envelope with a printed post fee sign was broadcast for the last time 20 years ago
