Polish Post Office will honor the birthday of its founder

On Saturday, August 1 this year. Poczta Polska will introduce into circulation the emission stamp "500th anniversary of the Birthday of the Grand Duke of Lithuania and the Polish King of Zygmunt II August". The value dedicated to the last Jagiellonian and at the same time the founder of the Polish post is a joint publishing house of Poland and Lithuania.

The stamp, by Bożydar Rozdeva, was presented a fragment of the painting of Jan Matejko from 1867 "Zygmunt and Barbara" from the collections of the National Museum in Warsaw. In the background of the number 500 - parts of the emission name - Arras was entered, the chair cover with the monogram of Zygmunt August (around 1555), from the collection of the Royal Castle in Wawel.

Zygmunt II August, the Polish king and the Grand Duke of Lithuania, was the only male descendant of Zygmunt I Stary and Bona Sforza. Behind his initiative, the Crown of the Polish Kingdom and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, under the Lublin Union, were combined into one country, the Polish -Lithuanian Commonwealth. The royal patronage and substantial artistic foundations are a testimony to the golden age of the Republic of Poland.

The main reasons for the establishment of a new institution were the desire to become independent of the imperial mail and the factor of the Fugger family from Augsburg and to create a permanent information corridor for diplomatic and commercial contacts with other European countries. The ruler argued his decision as follows: having an eye on our own and our subjects' convenience, so that both we and they could send to Italy both letters as well as other things .
