Stamp on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ignacy Łukasiewicz
On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ignacy Łukasiewicz, Poczta Polska issued an occasional stamp with the image of our countryman, an outstanding inventor. The philatelic value in a circulation of 100,000 pieces went to post offices throughout the country. On March 15 this year, at the headquarters of Polish Naftowe and Gas mining, the stamp was presented.
The Sejm of the Republic of Poland established 2022 as Józef Ignacy Łukasiewicz (1822-1882), due to the great and extraordinary merits for the Polish industry and economy, as well as his commitment to the fight for the independence of the homeland and care for employees.
Ignacy Łukasiewicz is one of the greatest Polish scientists and inventors, a pharmacist, patriot, independence activist, social activist, but also a great philanthropist. He also served as a deputy for the Galician Sejm of the 4th term (1877-1882).
He was born in 1822. In the years 1852-1853, together with Jan Zeh, he worked on crude oil distillation, from which he obtained kerosene. Seeing the great potential of his discovery, he sought the opportunity to use it. In this way, in 1853 he constructed the world's first oil lamp, which he made together with Adam Bratkowski.
In 1854, in Bóbrka, Podkarpackie, he founded the first crude oil mine in the world, thus giving the beginning of a large industry branch. Profits from this undertaking were allocated by, among others for the financial support of the January insurgents. He was also involved in social activities by providing financial assistance to peasants, creating an insurance institution in Bóbrka - the brotherly cash register. Ignacy Łukasiewicz also helped organize and finance schools.
For charity in 1873 he received the title of papal chamberlain and was awarded the Order of St. Grzegorz by Pope Pius IX.
The initiator and partner of the edition of the stamp commemorating the life and achievements of Ignacy Łukasiewicz is Polish Naftowe and Gazownictwo.
The PGNiG Foundation also bears the name of Ignacy Łukasiewicz.
It is worth recalling that in 1982 Poczta Polska issued a stamp on the occasion of "100. Anniversary of the death of Ignacy Łukasiewicz. "
