Transport of animal products to the EU

Let's protect the European Union against animal diseases.

Foreign animal products may contain pathogens that cause infectious diseases.

Due to the risk of introducing diseases into the European Union (EU) (1), raw procedures apply to the introduction of certain animal products to the EU. These procedures do not apply to the transport of animal products between EU Member States or for animal products in small quantities intended for individual consumption from Andora, Iceland, Liechtentein, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland.

All products of animal origin that do not meet these requirements should be handed over to the EU so that they can be removed under official supervision. Failure to submit such products may result in a fine or initiation of criminal proceedings.

The following goods can be brought to the EU if they meet the conditions and weight limits given in points 1-5 below:

1

Shipments for your own use, which contain meat, milk, meat products or dairy products (other than initial milk powder, other preparations for initial baby nutrition, special medical food and food for pets required for health reasons), can be brought or sent to the EU only if they come from sheep islands or greenland, and their weight is not exceeds 10 kg per person.

2

Shipments for your own use, which contain initial milk powder, other preparations for initial nutrition of infants and food of special medical purpose, can be brought to the EU only provided that:

- They come from the Faroe Islands or Greenland, and their total weight does not exceed 10 kg per person, and that:

  • The product does not require cooling until consumption,
  • The product is a packed company product and
  • The packaging is intact, unless its content is in use at the moment.

- They come from other countries (other than the sheep islands or Greenland), and their total weight does not exceed 2 kg per person, and that:

  • The product does not require cooling until consumption,
  • The product is a packed company product and
  • The packaging is intact, unless its content is in use at the moment.

3. Pay food for health reasons.

Shipments for your own use, which contain pet food required for reasons related to the health of the pet with the passenger, can only be brought to the EU provided that:

- They come from the Faroe Islands or Greenland, and their total weight does not exceed 10 kg per person, and that:

  • The product does not require cooling until consumption,
  • The product is a packed company product and
  • The packaging is intact, unless its content is in use at the moment.

  • The product does not require cooling until consumption,
  • The product is a packed company product and
  • The packaging is intact, unless its content is in use at the moment.

4. Small amounts of fishing products designed for individual consumption by humans.

Shipments of fisheries products for their own use (including fresh, dried, cooked, cured or smoked fish, and some crustaceans, e.g. shrimp, lobsters, dead mussels and dead oysters) can be brought or sent to the EU only provided that:

- Fresh fish are gutted,

- The weight of fishing products, per person, does not exceed 20 kg or the weight of one fish if this fish weighs at least 20 kg.

These restrictions do not apply to fisheries products from the Faroe Islands or Greenland.

5. Small amounts of other animal products designed for individual consumption by humans.

Other products of animal origin, e.g. honey, live oysters, live mussels and snails, can be brought or sent to the EU only if::

- They come from the Faroe Islands or Greenland, and their total weight does not exceed 10 kg per person,

- They come from other countries (other than the sheep islands or Greenland), and their total weight does not exceed 2 kg per person.

Note: You can bring or send to the EU at the same time small amounts of animal products from several of the above five categories (point 1 to 5), provided that these products meet the conditions specified in the appropriate points.

6. Larger amounts of animal products.

You can bring or send larger amounts of animal products to the EU only if they meet the requirements for commercial shipments, including:

- requirements for certificates specified in the relevant EU official certificate,

- requirements for the presentation of goods and appropriate documentation at the EU entering at the EU Border Control Point.

7. Products released from restrictions.
